A Groom’s Guide to choosing an Engagement Ring

Since traditionally the responsibility for buying (and choosing) the engagement ring rests with the groom, you need to make sure that you are clued up on all manner of things: stones and their clarity and colour; different metals and their durability, settings and styles, fashions and trends.
However, the greatest responsibility as the groom is that you need to make sure that you are certain what your bride will want. Besides her ring size, you need to know her taste in these matters: whether she likes the traditional yellow gold, or would prefer platinum or white gold. If her taste in other wedding jewellery is simple, she is more likely to prefer a solitaire; whereas if she enjoys startling, eye-catching items, she may want a more modern, unusual ring sporting perhaps a cluster setting or a band of stones. So, if you want to do the romantic thing of getting down on one knee and holding out the little velvet box, you need to do your homework.
It's still not easy to make sure you pick the right ring – and after all, she is going to wear it for a very long time. So - if you are worried about not getting the choice right, you could arrange with your friendly wedding jeweller to have a pre-selected range of rings (priced right for your wallet) just waiting for the two of you to walk in and make a selection.  It sends the right message to your bride: that you really want to consider her in this most important decision.
On the subject of cost, what should you be spending? The concept of two months’ salary is one which dates back to 1947 and diamond giants De Beers who were trying to promote sales after the slump of the war.  Together with the slogan “A diamond is forever” they made it known that they wanted to make diamonds affordable for everyone, rather than in the hands of the rich only, as had previously been the case.  So, despite growing inflation, the idea of spending two months’ salary has remained a fairly constant one.
Another selling point for the expense is that diamonds are an investment. I’m not sure that your bride will see it that way, when you ask her to sell the investment some years hence, to buy a business.  Just see the diamond as an investment in your marriage.

Bucks Party Ideas

The best man will usually organise the buck's night. If this is your job, take into consideration what the groom wants. Don't be afraid to ask him for his thoughts or ideas.

Traditionally, bucks night occasion is for the groom and his groomsmen. Fathers of the bride and groom are not usually invited but it depends on the kind of relationship the groom has with these people and if he feels comfortable with inviting them. There is no rule saying you can't.

The buck's night is usually held at least a few days before the wedding day. This will allow the groom enough time to recover and look and feel great on his wedding day.

Remember it's definitely un-cool to hurt or humiliate the groom.

You might want to take up one of the ideas below:

Be creative! Do something really different. There's no limit to what you can do.

Have a weekend away fishing or hunting with your mates.
You could go rafting, hiking or even abseiling.
For something fun try indoor go-carting
If that's not your thing, you might want to try skirmish or laser games.
Afterwards you can grab some pizza and beer.

Book a golf trip to another state or city.
Hire a cottage in the country or by the sea.
Rent a House Boat on a river.
Hire a minibus and go on a wine tour.

Flowers and Bouquets

Brides and Bridesmaids

In this modern age, there are no hard and fast rules about what brides should adhere to when it comes to their wedding flowers. Bouquets now come in a multitude of colours and flowers which help to reflect a woman's style and personality.Remember that a bouquet is a wedding accessory, so do not pick a bouquet that will distract your guests. Your flowers should complement your wedding gown and you.
Groom & Attendants

Many weddings will see a matching flower from the bride's bouquet placed on the groom's lapel. Your bridesmaids do not have to carry the same bouquet as you. For a modern twist, why not have each of your bridemaids carry a different bouquet, but have them all tied up with matching ribbon.
Flowers on a budget

An increasing alternative to real flowers are silk ones. These wedding flowers will last a lifetime and are generally cheaper than the real thing, but still look fantastic.
Your flowers can be used more than once on the day! Use your ceremony arrangements as centrepieces for your reception.
Where possible try to select wedding flowers that are in season as this will help to save you money. A note to remember is that flowers are usually in higher demand during special occasions such as Valentine's or Mother's Day. Try to avoid these dates and you will be surprised how much you can save.
Centrepieces do not always have to be flowers. You can still achieve a classic, elegant look by using candles, potted flowers or even plants. This will allow you to have lush foliage without breaking the bank.
Instead of having a bouquet of expensive flowers, consider using cheaper plants and foliage to fill out your bouquet. Try using ivy or baby's breath. You will have a cheaper bouquet that still looks fantastic.
Your bridesmaid's can each carry a single flower instead of a bouquet. This will not only save you money, but can make a simple and elegant statement.
If your wedding is in a garden, take advantage of the flowers and greenery already surrounding you
Don't overlook smaller and independent florists as they will often charge less than big chain stores.

In Full Bloom

Having a summer wedding? Then there’s a great selection of summer wedding flowers for you to choose from whether your wedding is modern or traditional.

There’s a natural explosion of colourful blooms available; these include everything from tall flowering plants that are ideal for venue arrangements to delicate flowering annuals that add a soft touch to bridal bouquets, buttonholes and stylish table decorations. Wedding Flowers can have symbolic meaning, and thus should be coordinated by style, colour and symbolism.
Favourite Varieties

The popular wedding flowers are all available at this time of year and will add a gorgeous scent to your wedding day.
Roses

Roses are out in abundance and are a popular choice for many brides. Nowadays there is no problem in getting roses year round from florists.
Lilies

Lilies and calla lilies will be seen at many summer weddings. One of the most distinct varieties is calla lilies which are perfect wedding flowers for white themed weddings. Stargazer lilies can be used in venue arrangements as their large blooms and scent make them popular choices. Be sure that your florist removes the lily pollen in order to avoid it staining your beautiful white dress.
Gerberas

Gerberas are another colourful choice to brighten the atmosphere. These perfectly round  wedding flowers are great for bridal bouquets, as well as for adding fun and interest to reception arrangements.
Tropical Varieties

Many more brides are now interested in having tropical wedding flowers due to their bright colours, their modern, chic look and because they’re available year-round.
Anthuriums

These striking flowers originate from Central and tropical South America, and are commonly known as Flamingo flowers. Anthuriums can work well in bouquets and should remain the star of the show with other flowers as secondary.
Orchids

These have been a favourite with modern themed weddings and tear drop bridal bouquets. There are a number of different varieties including moth orchids (phalaenopsis) and cymbidium orchids. These delicate wedding flowers are well-suited to bouquets and also look good as buttonholes. Cymbidium orchids are robust and one of the most versatile flowers.
Cockscomb (celosia)

This plant gets its name from the crinkled, velvety flower head that resembles a rooster's comb. It's a great flower to add texture and bright colour to a bouquet and other arrangements. It is available in a variety of colours including red, yellow and pink.
Latest Floral Trends – Accessorising Flowers

The latest trend this season is accessorising your favourite blooms. Using accessories is a perfect way to make your wedding flowers unique and personal. You might think that the tiny details may not get seen but it's amazing what people notice and how much of a difference paying attention to the details can make.
Diamantes

Adding a touch of ‘bling’ to your bouquet and table arrangements is an elegant way to add a touch of sparkle. It's all about the size and quantity of the diamantes you use, balanced with the impact you want to achieve from your flower arrangements.
Butterflies

Butterflies are an extremely popular wedding theme and a perfect accessory to run throughout your wedding, and are very effective when added to the table centrepieces. You can decide if you want them to play a small role and only just be seen, or if you want to go for a much larger prominent feature.

Reduce Wedding Stress

Organising a wedding can create some very stressful situations. As with all aspects of life, sometimes things may not run as perfectly as we'd like, but it is important not to lose sight of the big picture. Remember that the most important thing on your wedding day is that you are marrying the person you love. And after all, isn't that the whole point?

tips to deal with your wedding day stress!

Every couple experiences wedding stress and these suggestions will help you deal with it more effectively.
  • Take a long bath by candlelight and soak stress away. Add 1-2 drops of essential oil for some well deserved aromatherapy.
  • Sit down and read or watch a movie. Take a break from wedding plans if you are feeling stressed out. A break will help you clear your mind and return to the task more focussed.
  • Turn on your radio and dance. Yes, your neighbours may think you're strange. Ignore them; it's a great stress reliever.
  • If you feel like yelling, yell at a pillow. Swear, yell and get your frustrations out! As an added bonus, nobody's feelings get hurt.
  • Do something romantic for your fiancĂ© or something nice for someone else. This lifts your mood and makes you feel good about yourself.
  • Play games on the computer or search for humorous webpages.
  • Take a vacation or road-trip with your fiancĂ©. Spend time together and remember the reason you're getting married. This also helps your relationship grow stronger.
  • Exercise, and it will help to relieve stress. The medical reason for this is that exercising releases endorphins. Another endorphin-releasing activity is sex.
  • Get outside and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you build a snowman, garden or have a barbeque, this will energize you.
  • Sleep. It sounds simple, but few of us get enough sleep. As a result, we end up feeling tired and listless. Sleep can help with your mood, energy and focus.
  • Don't get too upset over small things, your guests probably won't even notice!
  • Get all your suppliers' service agreements in writing, in the form of a standard contract. Spell out exactly what you want and don't want when you make the bookings. Don't wait until the wedding day to make major changes.
  • Learning to delegate is vital, especially the day of the wedding. Put someone else in charge of paying the vendors, moving the guest book from the ceremony to the reception site, double checking with the caterers, or any other small task. Read through your list and assign everything!
  • The week before the wedding call all your vendors and check the date, time and location with them to verify the correct details. Give a list of their phone number to someone in case they don't show up on the day.
  • Pack and bring along a bride's emergency kit which includes, extra panty hose, clear nail polish for runs, Kleenex, aspirin, spot remover, static cling spray, hemming tape, band-aids, a sewing kit with safety pins. For the groom's kit include: mouthwash, breath mints, razor, cologne and comb.
  • Fasten fake rings to the ring pillow, so they won't fall off. Have an adult carry the real ones. Also, don't give the pillow to the youngster until about two minutes before they start down the aisle.
  • Even if you are nervous and don't feel like it, eat something before the wedding. Have someone pick up a sandwich or veggie tray to share with the bridesmaids. You don't want to faint before all your friends and family!

Wedding Day Makeup

Your wedding day will see you be the centre of attention for the entire day. Everyone will be looking at you so you want to look your best. From putting on the veil, kissing your husband and dancing, your makeup will be disturbed. As your wedding make-up  plays an important role in complimenting your features, wedding gown and  accessories, it is important to try look your best.

To ensure that your makeup looks fantastic, use a professional make up artist. Make sure you have a trial a few months before your wedding day.
Skin

Your skin is the basis for your wedding day makeup as this is where it all begins. Make sure you drink plenty of water and stay out of the sun in the weeks leading up the wedding.
If you don't already use lip balm and moisturizer, now is the time to start. These items will help to keep your skin refreshed. Lip balm will moisturise your lips which is helpful because colour fades unevenly on dry lips.
For brides with oily skin, be sure to avoid any harsh skin treatments as these can actually increase the amount of oil in your skin. A better alternative is to being a skin care routine with cleansers and balancers made specifically for your skin type.
Don't be afraid to experiment with makeup in the months leading up to the wedding. You should aim to have your makeup choices made at least a month before the wedding so that you can be sure you do not have nasty reactions to new products.
Get your last regular facial a week before the wedding. If you rarely have facials, don't get one within a month of the wedding.
Use a handkerchief tucked in the bouquet to wipe lipstick from your groom's mouth after the kiss

Base

Now that your skin is looking fantastic, you'll want a flawless complexion:
It is a good idea to apply some moisturiser about twenty minutes before you start to apply your makeup. This will help to reduce slide.
Use some concealer underneath your eyes. If you anticipate that you'll be doing some crying, look for an oil-based concealer.
If your usual foundation wears away easily, try to find a formula with a little oil in it as this will help. Complete your foundation with face powder.

Cheeks

For a blushing bride look that doesn't disappear and fizzle out during the ceremony, use a powder-based blush because they will usually last longer than cream blushes.

Eyes

Don't ever pluck or wax brows the day of the wedding. There's always the chance overdoing it and you could develop red rashes.
A good effect is to use eye shadow primer before putting on the eye colour and apply a neutral shadow over the eye. This will give you a softer more natural look. Prep your eyelids with an eye shadow base or a little face powder. Use an off-white pencil inside the lower rims of the eyes to brighten them
Apply two coats of waterproof mascara. Let each coat dry for a few seconds before applying the next layer. If you think you'll cry a lot, leave your lower lashes clean and you will reduce the smudging.
Another idea you might like to try is an eyelash perm. They will last for about nine weeks.

Lips

If there's one thing you can bank on, it's that you will be doing a lot of kissing on your wedding day. This means you'll need a lip colour that will last. For a long lasting, kissable look, try the hints below.

Be sure to use a colour that looks good with your hair and eye colour and use lip liner in the same colour family. First outline your lips, and then fill them in for an extra layer of colour. Use a matte or longwearing lipstick because you don't want to be constantly reapplying your makeup during the day.
Layer lip products, such as primer, balm, or lacquer to help to make the lipstick stay on
Always brush your teeth before hand to ensure clean, fresh teeth.
Apply your lipstick with a lip brush. First one layer of lipstick, blot with a tissue, and apply the second layer.
Be sure to have makeup remover ready for mistakes. You all know that lippy doesn't just wipe off. Especially not off that beautiful white gown!

Test Your Makeup

Make sure you test your makeup approximately two weeks before your wedding. This will give you time to make any adjustments. Keep your makeup on for the duration of a meal, and see how you look after a few hours. You might even want to get a spray bottle and spritz some water on your face to simulate tears. This will help you determine if your makeup has the staying power you will need.

the perfect hairstyle for you !

Your hairstyle on your wedding day will complete your whole look. Whether you choose an up-do or opt to have your hair natural and flowing, we can all agree that a bad hair day is the last thing you want on your wedding day!
Wedding day hair tips

These wedding day hair tips will help you decide on a style that suit you and your look.

Decorate your hair with accessories such as headbands, tiny flower studs, jeweled hairpins, or a princess tiara. When shopping for these wedding hair accessories, try to wear your hair in your bridal style to make sure the accessories will work.
Tiaras are back in and are a fantastic choice as they look great on both short and long hair. You'll feel like a princess too!
To get your hair looking and feeling healthy, make sure to use a good shampoo and conditioner for your hair type a few weeks before your wedding day. Be sure that you always test any hair products you will be using on the day in advance. You don't want any nasty surprises on your wedding day.
Bear in mind that up-hairstyles have the tendency to age you. If your style is too tight, this will show in your face, especially in the photos. A simple chignon pulled back is much more relaxing on your head and face
Aim not to put too much product in your hair. Most modern brides with long hair wear it half up and half down these days. this creates a nice gentle look and creates a much softer illusions than having it all up.
Alternately, sometimes hair that is too loose can look messy. You don't want to have your wedding hair competing with your wedding dress or veil. For photography, avoid too many  pieces around your head as they will take away from your face. If you decide to wear your hair down, make sure it doesn't clash with jewellery or your gown's neckline
If you have short hair, a polished, simple and worn off the face look will best suit you. If you have a fringe, this should be the only hair on your face.

The Insider's Guide to Getting in Shape for your Wedding

Getting In Shape for your Wedding Day
Getting In Shape for your Wedding Day
Every bride wants to look her best on her big day. When you look good, you feel good, and your confidence and happiness are the most important factors on your wedding day. The best time to start a weight-loss program for wedding is early-on, which is why we send this email out now. It's time to get into healthy exercise and eating habits as soon as possible!

The way to get into shape comes down to four main components:

Cardiovascular activites to exercise your heart.
Resistance Training to burn fat and tone muscles.
Managing your diet to include healthy foods and reduce unecessary calories.
Getting enough rest & recovery time to allow your body to make the changes you want.

exercise

Regular exercise is an essential part of your weight-loss program. The benefit of exercise is that it increases your heart rate, oxygen intake and ultimately your metabolism.

Exercise can be broken down into two main types: Cariovascular and Resistance training. Cardiovascular exercises include running, cycling, swimming, brisk walking and other activites which get the heart pumping and burn calories.

It’s important to remember that you can’t target any ‘problem’ areas with specific stretches or exercises, instead the goal is to train your entire body to gradually change its overall composition. So cardiovascular activities are a main component of the overall approach. If you’re not used to exercising or have trouble finding motivation, join a gym or consider hiring a personal trainer who can tailor a plan to suit your fitness level and weight-loss goals for your wedding day. Regular appointments with a personal trainer before the wedding will force you to get motivated. Furthermore, you might like to start an exercise program with your partner or a friend.

The simplest way to get started is to go for a walk each morning after or before you have had a bite to eat. Having someone else with you will help encourage you to exercise consistently. Remember to build up as you progress- in other words as you become fitter you should try to challenge yourself by increasing your pace or distance covered each day.

Resistance Training is about exercising your muscles so they are toned and healthy. This can be done with light weight lifting, yoga, pilates and other activities. Resistance training actually has better fat burning and muscle toning properties then any other forms of exercise because you generally engage multiple muscle groups to perform the exercises and therefore use more calories to perform the exercises.

Keep in mind that there is a common misconception that if you lift weights, over-night you will explode into muscle and become a bodybuilder... This is simply untrue!

Gaining muscle mass has more to do with your diet then the excercise you do and also requires you lift very heavy weights that your body is not used to. We do not recommend this however wish to reinforce the benefits of a balanced exercise routine encompassing both resistance training and cardiovascular activities.

We also highly recommend seeking advice from professionals; there is a multitude of contradictory information on the internet and in the media about what does and doesn't work. Keep in mind that no two people are the same and what works for one person may not work for you. Have a few sessions with a personal trainer and remember that there is no quick-fix.

Getting in shape for your wedding is about setting long and medium term goals and working towards them slowly and consistently.
diet

What you eat before the wedding is just as important as how much your exercise (if not more important). You should aim to eat healthily, rather than simply cutting portion sizes. When you eat very little you can actually gain weight because your metabolism will slow down and go into starvation mode which can trigger extra fat storage. Don’t eat less than 1,200 calories a day and don’t force yourself to feel ‘hungry’ all the time. Remember that how much you need to cut your calorie intake depends on your age, size and current eating habits.

Once again, we highly recommend that you consult a professional nutritionist/dietician who can formulate a diet and eating plan for you which will take into account what you like and don't like as well as incorporating the necessary dietry components to compliment your exercise program. Remember that your diet and exercise plans should be designed together for best results.

We’ve compiled a list of some simple things you can do to improve your diet and calorie intake:
little things you can do

Radical changes to your diet are difficult to sustain. If you usually eat poorly you will find it hard to ‘change your ways’ overnight. Resolve to make some key changes you can incorporate into your current diet, for example:

Switch to ‘low-fat’ groceries – particularly dairy products. Many of the products you currently buy will also be available in a ‘diet’ or ‘light’ version.
Stick to whole natural foods - Fruits, Veges, whole grain breads and cereals
Stay away from anything with preservatives - these chemicals are unatural to the body and if cannot be broken down, will be stored in fat cells.
Stop drinking soft drinks and sweetened fruit juices and drink water or sugar-free diet drinks instead. Sugary drinks contain empty calories and do nothing to fill you up.
Aim to eat more at the beginning of the day and less at night. This means a full, nutritious breakfast and less snacking after dinner.
Change the way you prepare meals – this means less frying and roasting and more grilling, steaming and boiling.
Snack on fresh fruit, vegetables and nuts instead of biscuits, chips, etc.
Consider walking or cycling to work and take the stairs instead of the lift!
Try to incorporate high-fibre foods into your diet. Fibre helps ‘fill you up’ and will stop you snacking on junk food throughout the day.
    Reduce your alcohol intake.

weight loss don’ts

We’ve also compiled a helpful list of “Don’ts” to keep in mind.

Don’t embark on any fad diets prior to your wedding. Rapid weight loss as a result of ‘crash’ dieting is not a healthy long-term solution. Even if you do lose weight, you’ll put it back on the moment you stop, and often you’ll gain even more weight afterwards.
Don’t starve yourself in the days or weeks leading up to the wedding. You need a balanced and nutritious diet to look your best. Healthy-looking skin, hair, nails and eyes all need nutrients to flourish. Starving yourself may leave you looking pasty and dull, and it will also ruin your mood and energy.
Don’t lose so much weight you no longer fit into your wedding gown properly!
Don’t buy a tight-fitting gown in the hope you’ll lose weight.

weight loss services

Often we eat poorly simply because we don’t know what we should be eating. Information about nutrition, dietary requirements and fat and calorie intake is easy to find and published widely in many books and websites however as we mentioned above, consult nutritional experts who can tailor plans for you specifically.

The weight-loss industry offers a variety of services with different approaches to weight-loss. Some offer classes and information about diet and exercise, while others deliver pre-prepared meals to your home. Preparing nutritious meals can be an effort, especially when it comes to shopping and creating new and interesting recipes however, going to this effort will certainly have its long term benefits.

A weight loss service will take into account all of your nutritional requirements and claim to do all the ‘calorie counting’ for you. This seems like an ideal solution for time-poor brides caught up in their wedding-planning process but be wary of these services, think of how many people attend their meetings who are in their desired bodilyshapes...

It will be much more beneficial to you at this stage and for the future to learn the healthy habits so you can manage this for the rest of your life.
most importantly

Above all whilst it’s important to eat well and exercise regularly it’s also important to accept that women come in all shapes and sizes and it’s not possible to lose weight beyond our natural limitations. No matter what your natural body type, a well-fitted gown and expert hair and make-up will ensure you glow with beauty on your wedding day. Remember your smile and radiant happiness is what your guests will really remember!
